The World's Biggest Military Spenders

According to the latest comparable figures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, America accounted for 45% of the world's military spending—$1.2 trillion in 2007—more than the next 14 biggest countries combined.
Come on North Korea and Iran. How are we supposed to take you guys seriously as the only remaining members of the Axis of Evil if your spending doesn't even necessitate a footnote in the chart?

Really, though, this should have us asking the question of why we need 25,000 troops as potential cannon fodder stationed along and near the DMZ, when South Korea has a population twice the size, military spending over four times as great, and an economy 24 times the size of its starving, dwarfed northern neighbor.

Yeah, good question. Or why we need troops in Japan either. But, I am no military expert.

Me either, but as citizens it seems we 'deserve' an answer other than protecting South Korea from the North.

gentlemen i agree tat usa can smash iran and n.korea. bt the main problem is guerilla war tat they will stage as a sequel to the whole story. look us spent $79 b.dollars in 2003 against iraq but now has to spend over $1 trillion since the past 8 yrs!! and its negative effects r vry clear. so it isnt the fighting which is the main problem the maintanance of victory.
